Heath Ledger

Thursday January 24,2008

By Martyn Brown

HOLLYWOOD star Heath Ledger made a friend promise to wake him the next morning – but the following day he was found dead.

Shekhar Kapur said the actor asked him on Monday to call his New York flat in the morning.

Kapur, who directed Ledger in The Four Feathers, said: “He said he could not see me that night but really wanted to meet me the next day.

“He made me promise that I would call him in the morning and wake him up. I tried. Little did I know that his soul had already left his body.”

Ledger, 28, discussed death in a TV interview weeks ago. The actor said he “felt good” about dying because he was “alive” in his daughter.

Police confirmed that sleeping pills – both prescription and non-prescription – were found next to his naked body.

NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said a rolled-up $20 note was found nearby but said no illegal drugs were found in his apartment. An autopsy proved “inconclusive”.

Ledger’s former lover, Michelle Williams, mother of his two-year-old daughter Matilda, was flying back from Sweden yesterday. She was said to be devastated. The star of Brokeback Mountain and A Knight’s Tale revealed in one of his last interviews he suffered from insomnia.

He confessed to taking one Ambien sleeping pill after another while filming the new Batman movie The Dark Knight.

He said: “Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night. My body was exhausted and my mind was still going.”

Supermodel Helena Christensen, 39, who was on her way to visit Ledger  when she learned of his death, said: “He was so extraordinarily talented.”

George Bush yesterday postponed the launch of an anti-drugs initiative.
