UK FACES CLIMATE TARGETS CHALLENGE

Hilary Benn has backed EU plans on climate change

Wednesday January 23,2008

The Government has vowed to play its full part in reaching climate change targets which will cost Europe more than £40 billion in the next 12 years.

The price, insisted the European Commission, is a bargain - only one tenth of the price of doing nothing.

The most ambitious bid yet to tackle global warming involves a massive switch to renewable energy sources, and legally-binding targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions by one fifth by 2020 and to boost energy efficiency by 20% by the same deadline.

The overall EU-wide burden will be shared between the 27 member states - with the UK told it must increase reliance on renewable energy from less than 2% now to 15% of the country's total energy needs by 2020, as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 16% by then.

That means major investments in wind energy and biofuels to meet environmental pledges all EU countries entered into last year.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said the Commission's proposals - which now face months of negotiations between Euro-MPs and EU governments - were the right response to put those pledges into practice.

He said Brussels was leading the first comprehensive climate change offensive in the world to reduce greenhouse gas output by 20% within a dozen years - and by 30% if other nations are prepared to join in.

Environmental groups said the plans were too little, while industry questioned the feasibility of meeting the goals - and paying for them - on time.

Mr Barroso said what was proposed was realistic and financially manageable - the equivalent of about £110 per person per year until 2020 - or three refills of the average car's fuel tank annually. "A reality check is needed - that is one tenth of the cost of inaction" Mr Barroso told Euro-MPs in Brussels.

Environment Secretary Hilary Benn said that the proposals sent a clear signal to the world that Europe was taking decisive action to fight climate change. "This plan shows exactly what we are aiming for globally - a comprehensive and effective agreement to tackle climate change, with the carbon market at its heart. With a global deal, the EU will up its commitment to cut greenhouse gas emissions to 30% by 2020."

HOW CAN WE TRUST THE POLITICIANS ON CLIMATE CHANGE?

29.02.08, 12:06pm

I just read the comments above and I despair! Tackling climate change is supposed to be Labour and Conservative Party policy. Yet where I live in Kent Tory-run Canterbury City Council is denying it even exists. That flies directly in the face of what David Cameron has being saying. Apparently this is because the local council leader John Gilbey does not agree with David Camerons policies and denies the existence of climate change We cannot trust politicians to protect our environment.

This politically motivated lie has been exposed by many experts, but their voices are seldom heard.

It’s kinda ironic that although politicians are constantly cited as being the most untrustworthy liars on gods earth, there are still plenty of disciples who are willing to believe this and many more of their ever expanding list of fairy tales!

Wake up!

UK FACES UNSUBSTANTIATED CLIMATE TARGETS CHANGES.

23.01.08, 7:16pm

What a load of testicles.
It has already been said, Religion and global warming are the 2 biggest con tricks of all time.
Why should I suffer by being financially robbed by another load of bleedin foreigners from across the water in Brussels who want to save the planet along with our little island for another bunch of bleedin foreigners to benefit from who have uninvitedly invaded us. Any money which I have is mine and I want to spend it how I choose, not on scumbag foreigners.
I will be leaving this crumby shithole of a earth one day and I begrudge leaving anything to those whom have not earned the right to be here by indigenous means.
I do not give a flying frog about this so called climate change, global warming, I look out for me and mine.
Why should I suffer when Judas Jock and his gang fly and drive around the world in gas guzzlers leaving a carbon footprint billions of times the size of ours or that of Sasquatch.
The Yanks, Japs and Chinese will carry on billowing it out while Judas Jock refills his coffers with our hard earned dosh.
Just imagine the carbon footprint of Buck House, Windsor Castle and Balmoral which we pay for but do not enjoy. Just imagine the carbon footprint of the House Of Commons and The House Of Lords, they will not be charged extra or meaningfully curtailed. Just imagine the carbon footprint of fat John Prescott, ooh.
ONE BIG CON, this world will look after itself like it always has done throughout time.
Do not be sucked in by these lies.

MORE PAIN

23.01.08, 5:26pm

Get ready for more stealth taxes in the name of meeting our targets. I notice that all the new entrants into the E.U. don't have to meet these targets, does someone want their votes?
