A FATHER who threw his six-year-old son to his death from a hotel balcony was cleared of murder today.
John Hogan, 33, from Bristol, hurled son Liam from the fourth floor then jumped himself with his two-year-old daugther Mia in a suicidal act described as "selfish love" by his ex-wife Natasha.
Liam died of head injuries but Hogan and Mia survived with broken limbs in the incident during their holiday on the island of Crete.
A Greek court today ruled that John Hogan was "incapable" of murdering but will be sent to a psychiatric unit.
President Paraskeri Kiraleou, the senior judge at the trial, said: “His responsibility was diminished. He was incapable of murdering his son and he needs to be in a psychiatric unit for therapy."

Hogan said nothing as he was led from court by two police officers.
His lawyer Dimitris Xiritakis told reporters: “It is the right verdict.”
Hogan will continue to receive treatment in Greece while British and Greek authorities discuss his long-term care.
But later, as he was escorted back to the cells in Chania, Hogan told a film crew: “How can I be pleased, because my son is dead.”
His ex-wife Natasha condemned the verdict, saying that her son had “lost his young life for nothing”.
In a statement read out on her behalf, Mrs Hogan, 35, a nurse who now lives in Newport, Gwent, said: “We have found it particularly difficult to hear the circumstances of Liam’s death all over again.
“I have done my best to provide a balanced view of John and our life together so that the Greek court is aware of the troubled times in both John’s life and our relationship together.
“This result, albeit somewhat unexpected, has left me feeling that Liam lost his young life for nothing.”
“I accept that an act in a moment of complete madness was uncharacteristic of John but to have done this to our children was unforgivable.
“John is no longer my husband and plans are afoot to rebuild our lives away from the media spotlight.
Mrs Hogan fought back tears as the statement was read out on her behalf on the court steps by Avon and Somerset police constable Russ Jones."
The court had heard that Hogan’s relationship with his wife had been breaking down and their attempt to salvage their marriage during the holiday in August 2006 had failed.
On the night he plunged from the hotel balcony with their children, she had just started packing her bags.
Before the verdict, Hogan, whose two brothers committed suicide, told the court he felt no guilt over Liam’s death as his son and God had already forgiven him.
He said: “I loved my mother, I loved my two sisters but I loved my wife and children more than anything. They meant the world to me.”
He said: “Whatever you do to me in this court, no one can do to me what I have already done to myself.
“I have lost a daughter and I have lost a son until someone decides to take my life."
After breaking down in tears, a shaking Hogan added: “My wife has every right to hate me. I took away her children.”
Hogan’s psychiatrist said his actions were caused by an “earthquake” of psychosis.
Joannis Nestoros, a psychiatrist from the University of Crete, said: “He was away from reality. He did not know what he was doing. It was not his intention to harm the children. He thought he would be able to take his children to heaven. This was not logical.”
NO KEEF HE WILL NEVER BE FREE AS LONG AS HE LIVES

He has to live with what he has done.............Thats punishment enough...........the man is clearly tormented.......there are degrees of mental illness...............those who have severe mental health issues would be unable to post their views as well as you do..................so clearly you do not have an insight into how tormented this man was/is. I hope you never reach those dark depths.

LIFE HAS NO RULES
24.01.08, 2:14pm
I WILL NOT EXPLAIN MY PERSONALL SITUATION BUT SURFISE IT TO SAY I HAVE BEEN THERE AND AM THERE MOST DAYS.
IF HE DECIDED TO KILL HIMSELF I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THAT BUT HE DID NOT HE THREW IS SON OFF THE BALCONY THEN JUMPED HIMSELF WITH HIS DAUGHTER AFTER A FEW MOMENTS TO COMTEMPLATE WHAT HE HAD DONE BEFORE JUMPING.
IF HE HAD DECIDED TO KILL HIS WIFE FOR LEAVING HIM AGAIN UNDERSTANDABLE, BUT HE CHOSE, I SAY AGAIN CHOSE TO KILL HIS CHILDREN IN A SELFISH ACT.
SO THERE IS ONLY ONE COURSE TO GO AND THAT IS T- TRY HIM FOR MURDER.
ALSO THE GREEK HAVE NOT FOUND HIM GUILTY OF MURDERD SO AFTER SATISFYING SO DOCTORS OF HIS MENTAL STATE HE WILL BE FREE IN THE NEAR FUTURE.
NO PUNISHMENT.

TO THOSE WHO JUDGE
24.01.08, 9:29am
You are fortunate not to suffer with mental health problems, if you had any knowledge of the torment and suffering of those who do, you would not be so quick to pass judgment. This man was clearly mentally unstable at the time & has to live with what he has done...........enough punishment...............he clearly needs help as do his family.
I sincerely hope you or your loved ones are never affected with mental health problems.

BALCONY FATHER CLEARED OF MURDER

Let's hope his room at the mental hospital is on the top floor with a nice balcony.
This has nothing to do with mental illness and all about punishing his wife.

It'll be interesting to see if Britain's worst suicide exponent tries to do harm himself now that's he fooled some thick Greeks.
Give him enough rope....... hopefully he'll use it. He's scum and we all know it. It was selfish act from a coward.

DO NOT SIT IN JUDGEMENT

I find the British so bloody judgmental. Clearly this man was not in his right mind. Clearly all of you who have an opinion have no idea about mental illnesses especially those that are genetic. And it is, generally, those who know nothing who have the most to say. This man will suffer for the rest of his life. How much more does he need to suffer?
