THE issue has divided stargazers for centuries.

Now finally this picture provides evidence that there really is life on Mars – or does it?

The photo from the Red Planet appears to show a Yeti-like creature with a huge head making its way down a mountainside.

It was taken by a Nasa space probe, and its appearance on the internet yesterday fired the imagination of every science fiction fan who secretly yearns for a close encounter with an extra-terrestrial.

Then again, of course, it might not be a Martian at all...but just a strange rock formation.

Initially, astronomers hoping for signs of life on the fourth planet were disappointed when Nasa’s Mars Explorer Spirit sent back images from the surface four years ago.

The pictures showed a red, drab, dusty surface devoid of life.

But one space enthusiast scanned every rock and crevice and spotted the ape-like “Martian”, which appeared as just a pinprick on the original photograph. The image was then blown up and posted on a Chinese website.

The intriguing photo will again focus attention on Earth’s nearest neighbour, which many scientists have long believed could harbour alien life.

One stargazer writes on the site: “My first thought – it’s Big Foot! If you show me another rock in another photo from Mars or Earth that naturally looks like that, I will reconsider.”

Another says: “These pictures are amazing. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I looked and saw what appears to be a naked alien running around on Mars.”

But it should be remembered that after a phenomenon dubbed “the face of Mars” caused great excitement in the Seventies, it turned out to be just a rock formation.

The photographs showed what appeared to be a human head staring into the night sky.

The Mars Explorer Spirit rover touched down in 2004 for a three-month mission to search Gusev Crater, a rock-strewn stretch of dusty soil which scientists believe may be the bed of an ancient lake.

Beaming its images across millions of miles of space, the six-wheel robot had been deployed to examine rocks which could offer clues to the Red Planet’s geologic past.

If Mars once had surface water, it had the potential to support life.

Analysis of soil uncovered when a wheel jammed on Spirit revealed that it contains 90 per cent silica – a concentration only likely to have formed when water is present.

If it can be proved that Mars had water within the last few millions of years it would make the discovery of past or current life more likely.

Perhaps this new picture might just provide the answer...

This is going to sound very sci-fi for you,but it would be a lot tougher on Mars (I designed the Mars rovers 1987) and they found people like us who wear clothes and caps but no breathing devices that I can see. There are tons of animals of every shape and size.Fossils are laying all over the ground,but Nasa will not disclose life on Mars and covers evidence of life like stalwarts hording the gold treasure. As best I can tell their animals are smarter on Mars because for some reason they mix species in their groups and even ride each other,but I only get to see what's from 2 rovers and a few remnants from Pathfinder & Viking missions. It's harsh there on Mars with so many snakes ,rats,tiny animals,large ones ,huge insects like in the movies,freaky DRAGONS of all sorts,and so many of these (1/3 gravity on Mars) stem-like snake-looking animals with bulbous heads,like a TULIP with a head instead of a flower. Oh and weirdest of all some of the flower-heads have almost humanoid faces like the Wizard of OZ.The animals all crowd together around the rovers and climb on them like a tourist attraction. Some of the dragons (Think New England Patriots LOGO) also have humanoid heads.It took me 4 years of research and I'm still not used to looking at them.Glad I don't dream about them. I assume you are wondering about the people,and I wish I had more sightings of them to report but mostly old men or middle aged.I have seen a family and about a 3 yr old boy with a Charlie Brown looking head who cried and ran from the rover because it probably moved and spooked him. I have about 1,000 pics on the comp. They are also on Photobucket. On Mars some of the animals look so menacing,yet I believe an astronaut from Earth would fear for his life there because these big animals would be OVERLY FRIENDLY and tear them to shreds with sharp fangs and horns accidently just playing.Think alligator pets.

anyone with half a brain can see that this is tha little mermaid statue transposed on to the picture of mars landscape, you can even see the boobs!

I believe that Clarence Mitchell is preparing a news confernce to announce that this is the "Creepy Man" that Jane Tanner was 80% certain was the man she saw outside the McCanns apartment.
After seeing this I reckon she will be 100% certain its him.

The McCanns Private Detective Agency,Metodo3 are preparing to fly to Mars today...they already have ex SAS men on the ground a family friend said. The same source said they were surounding a mud hut where the Creepy Man was holed up.

The PJ have dismissed this latest sighting as a smokescreen and diverisionary tatic by the McCanns. They further added that have no intention of visiting Mars.
Paulo Rebelo was over heard saying that he wished all the McCann lot would clear off to Mars.

It is most likely Gordon Brown trying to hide till all the bad news headlines are out of the way. Looking for somewhere to bury his head in the sand, 'cos he is sure unable to govern!!!
