It is understood police are investigating if the Australian-born actor died of an overdose of prescription pills.
The 28-year-old's naked body was found in his bedroom, surrounded by bottles of pills.
A police spokesman said Ledger was found naked at the foot of the bed, face down. Prescription drugs, including sleeping pills, were found nearby and no suicide note was found.
Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the city’s medical examiner’s office, said an autopsy was planned for tomorrow.
At around 11.30 pm British time yesterday Ledger’s body was brought out of the apartment as hundreds of onlookers watched. It was placed in the medical examiner’s vehicle, which left the scene a short while later.

Ledger with daughter Matilda and Williams

Ledger recently split from actress Michelle Williams with whom he had a two-year-old daughter, Matilda. The celebrity couple, who starred together in Brokeback Mountain, parted company in September last year.
His father, Kim Ledger, said that the death of his "dearly loved son" had been "tragic" and "accidental".
Speaking in the actor's home town of Perth, in Western Australia, Mr Ledger said that his son had been a "down to earth, generous, kind hearted, life-loving, unselfish individual".

“We, Heath’s family can confirm the very tragic, untimely and accidental passing of our dearly loved son, brother and doting father of Matilda,” he said.
"Heath has touched so many people on so many different levels during his short life that few had the pleasure of truly knowing him," he added.
Manhattan police spokesman Paul Browne said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at his home at around 8.30pm British time last night. When the housekeeper went to let the actor know the masseuse was there, she found him dead.
Police are thought to have already ruled out foul play.
Last year Ledger revealed he had been taking sleeping pills, which reportedly cause side effects in some patients.
The actor had trouble sleeping while filming the latest Batman movie The Dark Knight. He played The Joker, a character he described as a "psychopathic, mass-murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy".
"I probably slept an average of two hours a night," Ledger told a newspaper. "I couldn't stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going."

COWBOY: Ledger was propelled to fame after starring in Brokeback Mountain

He said he took two Ambien pills which didn’t help him sleep for more than an hour.
Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd paid tribute to the actor for delivering “some of the greatest performances by an Australian actor.”
Tributes to the 28-year-old Brokeback Mountain actor flooded in from actors and directors as neighbours in the Soho area of Manhattan described him as “sweet” and “a loving father”.
Mel Gibson said Ledger’s death was a “tragic loss” and added: “I had such great hope for him.”

Heath starred as a jousting champion in comedy A Knight's Tale
|
The actor, who played Ledger’s vengeful father in The Patriot, said: “He was just taking off and to lose his life at such a young age is a tragic loss.”
British actor Martin Ballantyne, 35, from Norwich, met Ledger when he worked as an extra in The Dark Knight, playing one of The Joker’s henchmen during filming in London last autumn.
He described the star as a professional figure who remained in character while on set, but was happy to share a joke and a cigarette with lesser lights once the work was done.

The body of the Australian actor was removed from his home last night

“I spent 14 hours with him on set so we got talking,” he said, “we had a cigarette together but I didn’t want to be too friendly because he was the big star.
“I can’t really remember what we said, it was just small talk, how are you, that sort of thing, but he seemed very pleasant. He wasn’t like a normal guy, I mean he’s a big star, but he was a very nice bloke.
“He was in character all the time on set, like a method actor he didn’t really switch off between takes, he wasn’t friendly and chatty while he was working.
Ballantyne added: “He didn’t seem troubled. I know he was having problems with his marriage at the time, but I only found that out afterwards.
“I was very, very shocked when I found out about his death. I’d always admired him as an actor and I jumped at the chance to be in a film with him.”
Ledger won Oscar, Bafta and Golden Globe nominations for Brokeback Mountain - during the filming of which he met Williams, a co-star, on set.
He also starred in a number of other smash films, including teen film 10 Things I Hate About You and comedy A Knight's Tale.
Ledger played the suicidal son of Billy Bob Thornton in Monster's Ball and had a starring role in The Patriot.
His latest film The Dark Knight is set to be released this summer. Ledger was cast as the Joker in the high profile Batman epic - a role tipped to cement his status in Hollywood.

SO SO TRAGIC.

In regards to the "Baptist Church Picketing his funeral" Let me just say, I'm a baptist, my parents are very religious, my Dad is a baptist minister...... My dad was just as upset as I was at the news of Heath's death. To him and I, every soul is valuable and Heath was a very talented actor. We both see Brokeback Mountain as a ground-breaking career move for him, nothing more. That baptist church is obviously made up of a bunch of "holier than thou" individuals who have their own demons to fight and feel the need to down-trod others in a sad attempt to make themselves feel better about their own sins. RIP Heath..... I will miss that beautiful smile on the silver screen. : (

Yes,extremely sad for both his ex wife, daughter and family especially but perhaps this may be a lesson to all that to take drugs in any form is a recipe for disaster.

HEATH! A TREMENDOUS TALENT, A TREMENDOUS LOSS
23.01.08, 9:30pm
Oh Heath! Another gone to soon. I saw Brokeback Mountain and hoped he would get an academy award for his acting in that movie. I felt that sometime, somewhere, he would. Words cannot express how I felt when I learned of this in the USA. A light gone from the world. I send my sympathy to his family in Perth, Australia, and to Michelle Williams, the mother of his beautiful little daughter. It's news like this that makes life hard to bear some times.
Goodnight sweet prince.

SUCH A WASTE...

..of a talented actor.
He was definately one of my favourites.
Ive heard that a baptist church are planning to picket his funeral because he played a homosexual in Brokeback Mountain? If so Ill be very disgusted and angry. It was just a role as part of his job and if they choose to disrespect and punish him for that then its going to cause so much aggro.
Rest in peace Heath. You were an amazing talented man and will be missed by so many.
