OUR GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE ASHAMED

Brown's government showed inhumanity in deporting Mrs Sumani

Sunday January 20,2008

By Neil Hamilton

THE Government should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

Last week, they callously allowed the deportation of a 39-year-old Ghanaian woman, Ama Sumani, whose student visa had expired. Normally, I am strongly in favour of deporting over-stayers, but this case is different.

Ms Sumani is terminally ill with myeloma. She needs regular kidney dialysis, which she has been getting here on the NHS. Ghana has no NHS and dialysis will cost £12,000 a year, which she cannot afford. Her deportation is, therefore, effectively a death sentence.

For the past 40 years, I have vigorously supported stricter immigration control and have been extremely critical of Conservative as well as Labour governments’ abject failure to ensure it.

They have turned our cities into a kaleidoscope of ghettos, which even Bishops now describe as “no-go areas”. Indigenous Britons are increasingly a minority in large parts of Britain and Muslim fundamentalism poses profound threats to our traditionally tolerant way of life.

That said, I also believe that strict controls should make it easier to temper the rigour of our immigration law with humanity. The inhumane treatment meted out to Ms Sumani cannot be viewed by a Christian country without condemnation. As St Matthew’s gospel puts it: “I was a stranger and ye took me in. I was sick and ye visited me.”

In a most remarkable case, the people of the Shetland Islands have put the Biblical precept into practice. They rallied around to prevent a similar case of unjust removal involving a Burmese woman and her two sons. Hazel Minns fled Burma in 2002 but her application for political asylum here was turned down two years later. Burma is ruled by a viciously repressive military dictatorship that does not hesitate to gun down its opponents in the streets.

Astonishingly, nearly 7,000 of the 21,000 Shetlanders signed a petition demanding the family be allowed to stay because of their “well-grounded fear of persecution” if they were sent back. Faced with that dramatic demonstration of popular opinion, the Home Office back-tracked and granted the Minns the right to remain.

Not every case is so deserving, however, as another news item this week demonstrates. Sometimes, the Home Office seems straight out of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde. In contrast to the draconian treatment of Ms Sumani, the Government deliberately allows thousands of undeserving students with expired visas to vanish into the woodwork every week.

The numbers involved are huge: 309,000  students arrived in 2006, nine per cent up on 2005, but because there are no checks on who leaves Britain we haven’t a clue how many stay on illegally. As Mr Bean’s “economic miracle” is exposed as a mirage, the Home Office faces a cash crisis. It can afford to deal with only a fraction of illegal over-stayers.

Pressure on its budget is so great that Jonathan Lindley, the Border and Immigration Agency’s Director of Enforcement, has instructed staff not to focus on bogus students. They haven’t the staff to cope. Instead, he has told them to concentrate on foreign prisoners and failed asylum-seekers, groups who have produced especially bad headlines. Under Government pressure, immigration officials’ priorities are media-driven.

Nothing necessarily wrong with that. But the real scandal is, after 10 years of Labour, our borders are porous as a colander. The problem of illegal immigration is so great and so much taxpayers’ money is wasted elsewhere that the Home Office budget is totally inadequate to deal with the crisis now engulfing it.

When Dr John Reid became Home Secretary in 2006, he condemned it as “not fit for purpose”. Will it be any better when his successor, Jacqui Smith, leaves it?

We should deport the Government Ministers responsible for this fiasco.

LIB/LAB/CON TRICK

23.01.08, 10:33am

The people have a choice when they vote and if they continue to vote for the lib/lab/con trick they will have only themselves to blame.

JUST HOW

21.01.08, 9:18am

Was it possible to remove this woman when all the thousands of others get legal aid to fight their deportation.

This government always goes for the easy option.

On the other hand,is the National Health Service supposed to treat the whole world, whilst natives are denied treatment.

Just where do we draw the line.

NO SUPRISE

20.01.08, 4:23pm

NO SUPRISE - at all every Labourite Government (and member/supporter) should be ashamed either of their activities or some of their members of parliament"

1. Remember the violence introduced/encouraged by the TUC and often supported (nine times out of ten) by Labourites -the Battles of Tooley Street, Wapping, Eddie Shah etc., etc.,,etc. ad infinitum.

2. Remember Mayhew, Owen,Stonehouse, Driberg, Bax, Mc Dermott, Maxwell etc., etc. ad infinitum who are far worse than the current ones like Mandelson etc. ( to be fair perhaps Labourites are improving!!)

OUR GOVERNMENT DOESN'T KNOW THE MEANING OF SHAME!

20.01.08, 2:24pm

Their only concern is themselves and what they want, especially where the people of this country is concerned.
They strut around the world telling other countries about Democracy whilst totally undermining ours.
We are living under a Shameless, Lying, Cheating, Traitorous DICTATORSHIP.

OH YES, THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED!
