FAMILIES HIT AS COST OF LIVING SOARS

ESSENTIALS: Food prices have soared

Wednesday January 16,2008

By Graham Hiscott

THE strain being placed on millions of families by rising prices was revealed in the latest figures yesterday.

They have seen the cost of the weekly shop jump by more than two and a half times the rate of inflation in the past year.

The overall rise in the cost of living remained unchanged at 2.1 per cent last month, according to Government figures.

But the average price of food and drink was 5.4 per cent higher last month than in December 2006 – adding almost £5 to a typical trolley of goods – and up from 4.8 per cent in November.

Among the essentials which have shot up in price is bread, with a typical wholemeal loaf going from 93p to £1.12 in 12 months.

Milk, meat, butter, margarine, sugar, coffee and vegetables have also soared. As a result, a typical trolley of goods has increased from £62.09 to £66.90, said the Office for National Statistics. However, food bills could be set to rise even higher after separate figures showed that prices charged by producers rose 7.4 per cent in the year to December.

But it is not only the prices of groceries which are rising above the rate of inflation. As millions of drivers know to their cost, keeping the car on the road has put a massive burden on household finances.

Petrol soared from 87p a litre in December 2006 to £1.03 a litre last month, while diesel has gone from 93p to £1.07.

That, combined with other essential vehicle bills, means the cost of motoring has gone up more than 10 per cent in the past year. There is little relief, either, for those who use public transport, with fares up 5.9 per cent.

Elsewhere, clothing, eating out, prescriptions and phone bills also rose by above average. Even heading to the pub has become something of a luxury. A typical pint of bitter has risen from £2.24 to £2.32, while lager has leapt even higher, from £2.55 to £2.65.

Higher mortgage costs, the credit crunch and a new wave of energy price rises have also left many households struggling to make ends meet. But it is not all bad news, with the price of some goods actually falling in price in shops over the past year.

For example, TV sets are now 14 per cent cheaper than last December, digital cameras have come down by almost 32 per cent  and package holidays have fallen by a modest 1.4 per cent.

Gas and electricity bills also fell last year – even though they are about to rise again.

However, the consumer prices index – the Government’s preferred measure of inflation – is still above its target of 2 per cent. The alternative retail prices index, which includes mortgages, fell from 4.3 per cent in November to 4 per cent in December.

GETTING WORSE

16.01.08, 11:26am

It will only end when we are reliant totally on this current government to survive and only if we obey their orders. Oil prices rise and petrol pump prices rise immediately. Oil prices drop and petrol pump prices do not. Why? Gas and electricity prices rise, our bills rise immediately. Gas and electricity prices fall, our bills never do. Why? Food prices rise, energy rises, transport rises, goods rise, council tax rises, stealth and recycling taxes hit you from all corners. I'm lucky in that in our household we have two earners who earn good wages for the area, but we still struggle sometimes. How on earth are low income families supposed to surive? It never ends, but keeps rising and rising above people's means. Can the government see this happening? Of course they can, but when we are all on the breadline they can help us, but on their terms. I dread to think what England will be like in 10 years time!

FUNNY THING?

16.01.08, 10:11am

Strikes me a little odd that our cost of living is rising and that the euro exchange rate used to be 1.48 euros to the pound and now hovers around 1.34,by the end of the year the rates will be 1 for 1 and then the single european currency will be here by the back door!

LIES

16.01.08, 8:47am

So the governments figures show that there is no inflation and even the RPI is coming down. Is this not the best example around of why you cannot believe a word Mc Broon and is Scottish Mafia says.
I have never in my life come across a bigger bunch of creepy liars than this nu labour lot.
