Damian Green urged Home Secretary to “get a grip”
By Jason Groves
HOME Secretary Jacqui Smith has been forced into making another embarrassing apology after giving out misleading figures about the deportation of failed asylum seekers.
In the latest Home Office blunder Ms Smith has admitted the number of failed asylum seekers dodging deportation by starting a fight on the plane home is double the figure previously published.
In a letter to Shadow Home Secretary David Davis, Ms Smith said an astonishing 2,079 deportation attempts failed in the last two years because of “disruptive behaviour by the passenger”.
It is equivalent to 20 every week, and almost double the previously admitted figure of 1,173 failures over two years.
Ms Smith said: “It has now come to light that some of this information was incorrect and the figure is in fact 2,079. Please accept my sincere apologies for this error.”
The admission is the latest apology by the Home Secretary, who has already had to own up to releasing the wrong figures for jobs in Britain taken by migrants and the number of illegal immigrants working in the security industry.
Shadow immigration minister Damian Green last night urged the Home Secretary to “get a grip” on her embattled department.
He said: “This is just the latest in a long catalogue of errors, omissions and mistakes – there does not seem to be a fact or figure that the Home Office cannot get wrong.
“Eighteen months after the then Home Secretary John Reid declared the Home Office was not fit for purpose it is clear that nothing has changed.
“The figures themselves confirm the Home Office has got very little control of any of the most basic elements of its immigration policy. We now know that every day three people who should be removed are managing to avoid it by starting a fight.
“This is clearly unacceptable and makes a mockery of the law. We need much better enforcement. “We cannot have a situation where thousands of people know they can avoid deportation by behaving violently. It is not only bad for our immigration policy, it is also worrying in terms of the safety of air crews and other passengers.”
A Home Office spokesman last night insisted the department’s figures were correct but that the wrong figures were published due to an “administrative error”.
Security industry experts claim that failed asylum seekers have developed a range of techniques for dodging deportation.
As well as starting fights on the plane, others are said to have feigned illness and even stripped naked in a bid to avoid being sent home.
APOLOGY

An apology from these people (MPs) is like water off a rat's back, it means nothing.
This woman would crawl naked over raw sewage and undergo any degredation in order to remain where she is, with her snout deep in the trough. See this "APOLOGY" for what it is.

THE WORD 'SORRY'.
24.12.07, 9:36am
It is now the accepted norm to give the apology of saying SORRY when caught with your trousers down or trying to justify the actions of incompetence against OUR country, hoping saying it will make everything right and be forgotten quickly which seems to work.
Why it works is because as soon as one fiasco is in the headlines another one comes along and the first one is forgotten and we let it, along with the equally useless opposition parties.
This misgovernment, lead by a unelected foreigner Judas Jock McBroone is the most disreputable and untrustworthy which I personally can remember.
I loathe, detest and am full of hatred towards them for that which they have done to OUR once beloved little island, I have never come across so many unhappy miserable souls as now.
I do not have many years left on this earth but wish this lot NO GOOD WILL WHATSOEVER, I cannot and will not forgive them.
Do you not realize that there are far too many Jocks in power and they are intentionally destroying OUR ENGLAND, go on, count them.
I WISH ALL DECENT FOLK A HAPPY XMAS AND A PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR, heaven knows we need one.
