Tommy Sheridan leaves his home yesterday

Tuesday December 18,2007

By Paul Gilbride

SOCIALIST firebrand Tommy Sheridan emerged from his home yesterday after being charged with perjury, furious his family had been left “traumatised” by a police raid and vowing to clear his name.

The former Scottish Socialist Party MSP was charged with perjury following a 14-month police inquiry centred around his £200,000 sex and drugs defamation case against the News of the World.

It is understood further arrests are likely to follow as a result of the criminal inquiry.

Sheridan was arrested on Sunday after finishing work as a talk show host at Edinburgh radio station talk107.

At the same time, nine police officers turned up at his family home in Glasgow which he shares with wife Gail and toddler daughter Gabrielle with a warrant.

Mrs Sheridan was cautioned and detained whilst officers searched the semi-detached villa.

Yesterday, as he left home for discussions with his lawyer, Aamer Anwar, Sheridan denounced the police for the way his family were treated.

He said: “Nine days before Christmas and my house has been ransacked, my wife left traumatised and my two-and-a half-year-old daughter has been reduced to tears by the presence of nine police officers.

“I am furious, shocked and shattered. My wife has been left in tears. But I am determined to fight these charges and clear my name.

“I have been so inundated with messages of support that the phone memory card is completely filled up.”

As he scraped his frozen windscreen before leaving his home he added: “My life is pretty much on hold now until this is cleared up, but I’ll be back at work tomorrow."

Mr Sheridan was charged by Lothian and Borders Police on Sunday evening, after being held for nearly eight hours in Gayfield Square police station, Edinburgh.

At his home in Glasgow, officers were removing items.

The 23-day defamation hearing at the Court of Session in Edinburgh, in which several members of the Scottish Socialist Party gave evidence against Sheridan, led to a split, with the SSP founder later establishing the rival party Solidarity.

He sensationally sacked his legal team during the proceedings, handling the action against the newspaper himself.

He won £200,000 in damages over allegations centered around orgies, and visits to swingers' clubs. The newspaper launched an appeal, meaning the money has not been paid to Sheridan.

The criminal investigation began after judge, Lord Turnbull said that conflicting accounts heard in court could mean that some witnesses may have perjured themselves.

Mr Sheridan, 43, had just finished his Citizen Tommy chat show on Sunday and was leaving the talk107 building on Edinburgh’s South Gyle Crescent at around 1.10pm when a white unmarked police Mercedes pulled into the car park at speed, coming to a halt directly in front of his Honda car.

The former MSP was allowed to collect an item from his car before being driven away with officers flanking him in the back seat.

Lothian and Borders Police confirmed a 43-year-old was arrested, cautioned, charged with perjury and released.

The force confirmed: “Inquiries are continuing in respect of others and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

A spokesman for Solidarity, the party he founded along with fellow former Scottish Socialist Rosemary Byrne, declared its “100 per cent support” for Mr Sheridan.

Returning home from his legal meeting yesterday Mr Sheridan would only say: “I have been told not to say anything for the time being. I am keeping schtum.”

SHERIDAN THE LIAR

18.12.07, 10:42am

so Tommy Sheridan is "furious" and his family are left "traumatised" because the police had the audacity to arrest and charge him, and then search his home. Well Tough Mr Sheridan, its long overdue that you and your lying family get their come uppance for believing it is acceptable to blatantly lie to your fellow colleagues and perjur yourself in court. A prison term (without sun beds) will possibly bring you into the real world where some of us believe in honesty, loyalty and integrity, words which have become completely alien to you.
