Pensioners over 80 are to get a rise in their extra allowance of just one penny a week.

The payment will go up from 25p to 26p a week from April.

The move was condemned from Labour's own benches in the Commons yesterday.

MP Brian Jenkins said the extra allowance was "neither use nor ornament" and should be ditched.

Even the man in charge, pensions reform minister Mike O'Brien, admitted his own mother had attacked the supplement as an "insult".

Is the rise ridiculously low?

No. Labour and for that matter any other politicaL party is not responsible FOR the elderly. They themselves,their children and relatives are.

Government is responsible TO the elderly and discharges that responsibility by the fair distribution - via the National Insurance Scheme - of a State pension geared to the REAL cost-of-living inflation rate. You pays in, you gets out whether it be Public or Private.

All private pensions should be underwritten by the public purse with the appropriate funding coming from the beneficieries be they employees or employers. A firm goes bust the pension scheme is frozen at that point. Subsequent employment re-starts the process.

A crook like Maxwell or a Chancellor like Brown coupled with acrobatic accounting, are incapable of keeping their hands off the pot and shifting the responsibility responsibility elsewhere.

If responsibility lay where control is exercised both Labour and Conservatives would have gone bust years ago.

Nice dream while it lasted, wasn't it?

It's not just Labour that has ruined the life of pensioners in this country, I remember a chap called Robert Maxwell who was one of the first to raid pension funds.
Two years ago a pensioner from this county was sent to prison for non payment of council tax, now what would happen if ALL pensioners withheld payment, prisons are at bursting point now.
I agree with other comments there does seem to be an agenda by Government to reduce the overall numbers of pensioners by denying them the right to a decent standard of living, just wish It could be proven, then watch the good old Labour shuffle.
However this lot are due to go the polls soon and the pensioners being in the majority now must protest with their vote. Of course Labour may well turn to all the migrants and say "we let you in now return us to power and we will bring your relatives here as well"

Silly question, all of Gordon Browns moves has been to kill the old (English) by stealth and deceptionwhile fooling the biggest part of nthe country he is helping them, he broughtin means testing knowing full well it would be complicated and most pensioners are private people who were brouht up during the war and learned to manage with virtually nothing.
The difference is now their bodies are old and cannot cope like when they were young I hope some one can save us from this "christian " it makes me sick just saying that about the man sorry did I say man I meant cretin
