Sir Paul McCartney backed a campaign against post office closures

Monday November 19,2007

Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney has backed a campaign to stop the closure of a post office near one of his homes.

He gave a personal message read out by his brother outside the post office in Lower Heswall, the Wirral, which could be axed.

The statement said: "This village post office is a vital part of local community life and as such should be saved for future generations to cherish.

"Its 100-year history should not be cast aside lightly. I agree with thousands of local people who feel that everything must be done to save it. Please help!"

Mike McCartney, 63, said he and Sir Paul have been using the post office since 1964.

He said: "It's very important our kid comes aboard and we have a voice that is recognised throughout the world. It's very important to stop it going any further. This was the first post office in Heswall."

The Labour MP for Wirral South, Ben Chapman, is also part of the campaign against the proposed closures in the Wirral.

In a statement on his website, Mr Chapman said: "I am assured that no decisions will be taken on individual post offices until the consultation is concluded.

"The post offices serve a large proportion of elderly people. They are often people who are not used to accessing services online and who have relied on these services for many years... their closure would be a big blow to the communities they serve and there will be much concern. As such, it is imperative as many people take part in the six-week consultation as possible so that their views are heard."

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said: "Each Area Plan will be subject to a six-week public consultation period. Then all the feedback will be looked at before making a final decision."

YOU WISH SIR PAUL.

with regard to this article.....
Nothing Sir Paul says or does will make the slightest difference. This is all about the EU universalising the postal system with public private partnerships and it has Adam Crozier's blessing....Unless Sir Paul would like to outbid the foreign firms who want to take it over, but he would still have to run it under EU regulations.
