BROWN VOW ON CLIMATE CHANGE BATTLE

Monday November 19,2007

Gordon Brown pledged to make Britain a world leader in the battle against global warming, with a green "technological revolution" which he said could create hundreds of thousands of jobs in the UK.

In his first major speech on the environment since becoming Prime Minister, Mr Brown hinted strongly that he is ready to extend the Government's target of a 60% cut in Britain's greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, revealing that he has asked an independent committee of experts to look at the possibility of an 80% goal.

He announced talks with supermarkets and other retailers over the elimination of throw-away plastic carrier bags from British shops.

And he launched a new Green Homes initiative, with a website and phone hotline to advise householders how they can reduce the carbon footprint of their properties.

Environmentalists welcomed Mr Brown's confirmation that Britain is "absolutely committed" to meeting its share of an EU target to generate 20% of Europe's power from renewable sources by 2020.

The commitment could see a surge in energy from wind, waves, solar panels, waste and biomass, starting with an announcement expected soon from Business Secretary John Hutton for a "significant" expansion in offshore windfarms.

Speaking ahead of December's international climate change summit in Bali, Mr Brown published a statement setting out Britain's vision of a new global low-carbon economy to hold the rise in average temperatures to two degrees Celsius or less.

And he said that any agreement stemming from the Bali talks should include "binding emissions caps" for all developed countries after 2012 to ensure greenhouse gases peak within 10-15 years and are reduced by at least half by 2050.

The international community faces a "historic and world-changing" challenge to build a low-carbon economy over the coming 50 years, Mr Brown told the conservation charity WWF in a speech in central London.

But he said the task was both "technologically feasible and economically rational" and held out the promise of new environmental industries generating £1.5 trillion annually and employing 25 million people worldwide - one million of them in the UK.

BROWN VOW ON UP THE 'CLIMATE CHANGE' CON

20.11.07, 12:18am

First, I've got to say, why does gormless gordy always have his mouth open, making him look even more gormless than ever? Is he catching flies?

Second, what makes the 'climate change' zealots, think that their 'experts' are right, and that they have a right to foist their opinions on everyone else?
Other experts disagree, and have equally compelling evidence to prove their case. Why can't THOSE experts be the official line - I believe them, not those who are government funded, and therefore have an agenda.
Of course, the only reason for the bandwagon, is that it's a money making machine.

19.11.07, 9:31pm

dear mr brown,i live in wales and have a coal fire that is a light 24 hours a day ,it burns coal like a small powerstation ,it coughs out smoke and soot and i must confess i burn household rubbish ,my carbon footprint has to be off he scale.a few years ago my labour council ,had british gas put in gas boilers for the council tennants with a huge discount for uptakers,as you can immagine every one took up the offer,so i decided to ring the council and ask if i could take up this opption,i was told no ,it was not available to people who owned there own house and to ring the gas company .so i rang the gas company and was told it would cost me thousands, yet it cost the council home tennants hundreds.years down the line im still burning coal but am thinking of burning old car tyres which i can get free.so mr brown you can shove your green ideals ,right up your chimmney.

BROWNS CLIMATE "TAX" CHANGE BATTLE

19.11.07, 7:25pm

Every time Brown opens his mouth it means an increase in tax. If he is really concerned about plastic bags dished out by shops then let him BAN them and make the shops use something else without charge to the public, that way he gets NO additional tax. Let him say that there will be no additional taxes on climate change and give back the windfall of £5 million pounds or so the treasury will gain on the price of oil going up above the £68 a barrel his pre budget costing was based on, the scumbag even added the recent 2 pence a litre tax when he never needed it for his spending plans but was frightened to impose it himself so he can blame his stooge Darling. His(Brown) biggest claim to fame was "prudent" budgeting.....well there is nothing prudent in imposing taxes and making decisions like Gold bullion sale at its lowest level for years and now saddling us with bailing out Northern Rock because he made a pigs ear of interfering again in matters that are above his business level. No "prudent" is managing on less not making the public the highest taxed ever.

19.11.07, 12:28pm

I trust Mr Bown will not be attending any international meetings and will insist that they are done by video link also can we expect him to be banning inports from India and China etc untill that start making reductions in their greenhouse gas emissions ans also we be calling for the free movement of poeple in europe to be stopped ??? because a Polish plumber can be a plumber in Poland why travel to england as it will only increases greenhouse gas emissions ie plane to get over here etc ,,,

A CON. ARTIST

19.11.07, 8:29am

BROWN is a con artist!

On one hand he is very, very correct developed Countries MUST cut gas emmissions - this will be done by huge rises in petrol, oil, gas, fares and taxes etc.,etc.

The guy is on the ball in his own miniscule brain - but - most of the money he will have conned out of us will then be given to undeveloped Coutries - which he appears to love - if the developers (dont steal as usual) their emmisions will join China and India - so in fact what BROWN is doing is forcing us to pay for increases in emmissions!
