PCSOS 'SOLVE CRIME EVERY SIX YEARS'

Monday August 20,2007

Police Community Support Officers solve one crime every six years, according to figures released under the Freedom of Information Act.

The figures show PCSOs hand out fines for anti-social behaviour, public disorder or motoring offences at a rate of one every four months, according to the Daily Mail.

In several areas of the country, officers failed to detect a single crime over the past year, the paper claimed.

The figures state that forces where PCSOs failed to detect any offences include the West Midlands, which has 644 officers, Northumbria, which has 248 PCSOs, and Nottinghamshire which is served by 217 PCSOs.

The Police Federation's Alan Gordon said: "PCSOs have been seen by some as a cheap alternative to police officers, who can make the public feel safe. But these figures show we were right to be concerned about what benefits they bring to the table."

In the past year the number of PCSOs nationwide has risen from 7,000 to 13,748.

PCSOs, who can earn up to £24,500 a year, have powers to detain suspects until police arrive and hand out fixed-penalty notices for a range of offences.

A Home Office spokesman said detecting crime and handing out penalty notices was not the prime function of PCSOs.

He said: "To attempt to measure their success solely by looking at the number of penalty notices and crimes they detect is to miss the point.

"Their primary role is to provide high-visibility reassurance, build confidence in communities and support police officers."

PCSO

23.09.07, 4:26pm

one evening shift as a pcso for me, going out for 7 hours some times without a break, dealing with asb, drugs, under age drinking, speaking to members of the public. Dealing with neighbour disputes. I work hard as a pcso I dont deal with solving crime as that would keep me in the police station for all off my shift.
I have been told so many time from the community it is lovely to see you out and about just like the old time police officers. alot of neighbourhood police officers still drive in cars pcso dont, we can be stopped at any given time and spoken to.

CSO'S

23.08.07, 8:13pm

Lets face it, it's articles like this that make the acceptance of CSO's within the Police Community so difficult for the public to accept.

Articles circulated by the media who can't even get their facts right, trying to right off the CSO role before its even started. This is OLD NEWS - we've been reading articles like this for 4 years now!

Everyone has the right to an opinion but please can you atleast get your facts right before launching it on the British public. To the journalist who wrote this article, let me correct you on afew MINOR points:

1. It has never been the CSO's job to solve crime. That is the job of police officers.

2. Don't compare CSO's with Police Officers-they are not the same!

3. CSO's are providing a deterrent to criminals by providing high visibility patrols so that police officers can get on with investigating and solving crimes.

4. Try getting a police officer to spend their day responding to minor jobs such as anti-social behaviour, nuisance neighbours and parking issues-we wish!

At the end of the day the British people don't like change, but it is something we all have to accept. No one seems to mention the endless pieces of vital intelligence the CSO's gather by integrating into communities building trust and a good rapour.

I am a CSO and trust me the job is not yet perfect, but it has only been around for 4 years, the police officers role for 100's. It takes time to work out teething problems which is happening as we speak.

We as CSO's are doing alot of important work so let it go and appreciate the hard work we are doing and the crime we are preventing-we are making your neighbourhood a safer place to live-you think you'd be grateful!

1.
Perhaps people turned to pcso's when bombs went off because there were less regular Police officers on the streets thanks to this governments "policing on the cheap"

2.
Your job is to be "Seen by the public" The feral yobs and criminals are unafraid of real police with all the "powers" they have so I am sorry, the actual good you are doing is not what you think.

3.
I do know what you do... its Uniform reassurance which wrongly suggests to the public they are safe.

4.
I do have a job

5. I am not sure you should have a job when you say you hope someone is is subject of violent crime just to give credence to the myth that we are being protected by well meaning uniformed street walkers.

6.
Ask a regular PC the definition of ROBBERY and ask him what would be said if he told a member of the public he hoped he would be robbed!!!!!

TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY

21.08.07, 1:24am

Well, I said it at the time these toy policemen and women were let loose on the streets that they were a total waste of money and it looks as though I was correct.

Do you know that in Northants they are not even allowed to issue a parking ticket? Kettering has a dismal parking problem with just ONE Traffic Warden who simply cannot cope whilst these expensive Toy Coppers swagger around town looking important! Total and utter waste of money.

PCSOS 'SOLVE CRIME EVERY SIX YEARS'

20.08.07, 9:45pm

Really! I thought they were just paid to walk around in uniforms with a serious chip on both shoulders! I am very surprised that they actually detect 1 crime every six years. I thought they never achieved anything worthwhile except to annoy rank and file police officers.
