'CAN DO BETTER' FOR TROOPS - BROWNE

'We can do better for troops' - Defence Secretary Des Browne

Saturday August 18,2007

Defence Secretary Des Browne denied claims that the Government was failing to do its duty by British troops.

Mr Browne spoke out after the Royal British Legion attacked ministers this week for failing to uphold the Military Covenant - which guarantees personnel fair treatment in return for putting their lives on the line.

He also confirmed that the British presence in Iraq would be reduced from about 5,500 to 5,000 "in a matter of weeks".

The comments, in an interview with the Sunday Mirror, are the first by Mr Browne since the Legion's "Broken Covenant" campaign emerged.

The drive is calling for better medical care, improvements in coroners' inquests to ensure swift closure for bereaved families, and more compensation for the seriously injured.

Mr Browne said: "I don't accept that it is broken but I think that we have to be careful that we live up to it. It is our duty to live up to it.

"I agree with the British Legion that we have a responsibility to support our troops and support their families, particularly when we are asking people to do very difficult and dangerous things for our security.

"I think we are improving. I'm not saying that there aren't things we need to do. I accept that we have to continue to get better in the areas that they have identified."

Mr Browne said he was reviewing some compensation payments which were perceived to have been too low, and insisted action was also being taken to ensure troops were not deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan more frequently than advised by military guidelines.

"I recognise that in some areas a small number of people are being asked to deploy more regularly than those guidelines," he added.

DEFENCE SECRETARY?

19.08.07, 11:20am

Yet more mistakes by this 3D (dismiss, defend, deny) government!
Browne is looking after our forces so well that their families are having to send them "FOOD PARCELS"!
Why is he called the Defence Secretary, surely he should be the Attack Secretary!

GET RID OF NEW LABOUR AND BRING HOME THE TROOPS!

19.08.07, 9:11am

Browne is just another tame yes man and a well-versed liar but then aren't all New Labour MPs liars! Show me one that isn't?

If the British people put New Labour back into power, this once great country of ours is finished....

New Labour will sign away our sovereignty to the EU without a referendum, open the borders still further to millions of economic 'migrants' thus causing greater strain on an NHS already sinking into Third World style incompetence and the unchecked crime rate will continue to reach new and frightening levels of epidemic.

Not to mention schools which are in a state of near-anarchy with collapsing standards in performance and morality the norm.

And then of course there is the continuation of illegal wars and the unnecessary deaths of our brave armed forces personnel who risk their lives daily for the lowest form of corrupt scum on the face of this earth.

Apparently, opinion polls put New Labour ahead of the Tories to win the next General Election. These New Labour supporters and voters must have been living on another planet for the last 10 years!

We must get rid of New Labour and bring the troops home because they have been betrayed from day one by this Government, which must surely rank as the most fundamentally dishonest in the history of Parliamentary 'democracy'.

CAN DO BETTER FOR TROOPS

19.08.07, 8:58am

Failing to do its duty by British troops?
Come on now it been a failing right from the start, firstly by sending them to invade another country based on lies without proper equipment
and no idea of the consequences of this action for which many have made the unlimate sacrifice
yet still they maintain that they have not failed our troops.
A nip out to see them covered in secrecy, telling them what a good job they are doing dosen't make up for the ill thought out strategy and means of getting out before they went there,if that is not failing them, what is?

BROWNE ANOTHER LABOUR LIAR

19.08.07, 12:06am

Our troops are dying and will continue to die, because of the lies of this Labour government. Is it any wonder, that our armed forces are well below strength, partly due to the leaving rate of personnel. Who in their right mind would continue to put up with the conditions dished out by the liars and traitors called Labour!? This nation must get rid of this disgraceful, misreble excuse for a government, as soon as possible. We are already close to extinction as a country because of this lot of useless tools, and the longer our degradation goes on, the harder it will be to recover. WAKE UP people!

BROWNE COULD NOT CARE LESS

18.08.07, 10:46pm

Mr.Browne could not care less about our lads in the front line, he says he's going to bring 500 home, how big of him considering that none of our troops should be there at all. They should have returned home as soon as they found no WMDs, in fact they should never have gone, that's what the inspectors were there for, and they found nothing. but it's just what Lord Bush wanted, utter destruction and lots of deaths, and it turned out just right for him a meat grinder. So what excuse has Browne and this so called government of ours in keeping our troops there? There is None. The UN will be taken over soon, as planed so I say get our lads out NOW.
