LOVE HEALS PAIN FOR GRIEVING PARENTS

The couple found love through tragedy, not pictured

By Rod Mills

TWO grieving parents who both lost daughters in road accidents have unexpectedly found happiness after falling in love.

School friends Robyn Oldham and Kirsty Green, both 15, died within 10 months of each other.

Ever since, Kirsty’s father Stefan, 48, and Robyn’s mother Carla, 40, have been campaigning to make Scotland’s roads safer.

The pair, who have both split from their respective partners, got in touch by chance and began talking about their quests.

Both are now helping each other to come to terms with the tragedies, and have found happiness since they began  dating four months ago.

Mother-of-seven Mrs Oldham, from Turriff in Aberdeenshire, said: “I never expected this to happen – but I’m very happy. Stef makes me smile whenever things are difficult.

“We support each other and we’re helping each other to get through everything. And we can always talk to each other about the girls.”

Mr Green added: “We are in love. The relationship is great. I just wish we had met years ago so Kirsty could have met her. That would have made things even better.”

Their newfound joy was tempered yesterday when a sheriff decided not to recommend changes to the law following the fatal accident inquiry into Robyn’s death. She was knocked down in September 2008 after getting off a school bus only yards from her home near Turriff in Aberdeenshire.

Mrs Oldham has been campaigning to make it illegal for vehicles to overtake stationary school buses.

But she said she was “angry and upset” that Sheriff Gordon Fleetwoodmade no such recommendation following the two-day inquiry held in Banff last month.

In his written judgment Sheriff Fleetwood said he was impressed by the “extensive and appropriate steps” taken by Aberdeenshire Council to try to avert a similar tragedy.

Robyn joined Turriff Academy when her mother and husband Derrick moved to the area in August 2008. She and Kirsty began a friendship which was tragically cut short after just three weeks when Robyn was killed.

But, just 10 months later, Kirsty herself died when a car, being driven by a friend, collided with another on a remote country route.

Mrs Oldham separated from her husband last summer, blaming the strain of Robyn’s death, and Mr Green has been separated from his wife for three years.

They met last year when Mr Green arranged to erect a plaque featuring both girls at Turriff Academy.

The couple now plan to continue their campaign to prevent similar tragedies happening.
