TEENAGER WHO RAPED GRANDMOTHER,86, COULD BE FREE IN 4 YEARS

Brutal thug Dale Boocock, 19

A SADISTIC teenager who raped an 86-year-old great grandmother while out on bail could walk free in four years.

A court yesterday gave Dale Boocock, 19, credit for pleading guilty to kidnap and rape.

But campaigners were outraged when he was handed an indeterminate sentence with a minimum term of only four years and nine months.

Boocock, who was high on a cocktail of drink and drugs, had been arrested on September 14 over a house burglary.

After being quizzed briefly, he was handed police bail.

At 1am the following morning he crept into the Springfield residential care home in Bradford and broke into the ground floor to rob residents.

Once inside he changed his plan and dragged the great grandmother from her bed and out of a window then across the flagstone patio before raping her in the grounds during a 50-minute attack.

She died just seven weeks after the unimaginable attack.

In a victim impact statement to Bradford Crown Court, her daughter revealed that in the weeks after the rape every time she visited her mother in hospital she saw “fear in her eyes”.

Bradford Tory MP Philip Davies, hit out at Boocock’s sentence last night, saying: “A minimum term of less than five years for such a callous, sick and revolting crime is completely unacceptable.

“Such a pathetic minimum term for such a revolting crime only goes to emphasise the depths we have now reached in society and how we need to take a much tougher stance on crime.”

A spokesman for Victim Support said: “This was a particularly horrific attack on a frail and vulnerable woman.

“It’s hard to imagine how traumatic this must have been for the victim.”

Victim’s campaigner Norman Brennan, a former PC, said: “With judges giving sentences like this it is hardly surprising the victims, the public and even my police colleagues have so little faith in the judiciary, to protect and to punish in a society plagued by crime.”

Prosecutor Heather Gilmore told the court that the victim had been a resident at the home since July 2009 and required 24-hour care.

She was visited daily by her husband who she had married when they were both aged 22.

Mrs Gilmore told the horrified court that while the woman was being treated at Bradford Royal Infirmary she asked a member of staff: “Will you go fight him? What have I done wrong? Go beat him for me.”

Although the rape was not found to have caused her death, Bradford Recorder Colin Burn said it would have a serious effect on an elderly woman.

And the judge told Boocock: “I have no doubt that whatever the eventual cause of death was, that her prognosis deteriorated rapidly as a result of what you did that night. It’s an appalling offence.”

Boocock later carried out another burglary and this time he was arrested.

He was subsequently charged with rape and kidnap after a DNA match.

In mitigation, Giles Bridge said Boocock did not plan the rape and kidnap and was a teenager of limited intelligence with an IQ of just 67.

The attacker admitted rape and kidnap, attempted burglary and two house burglaries.

Det Chief Insp Jon Hoyle said: “The only consolation I can offer the family is that Boocock was arrested soon after the offence and has been dealt with.”

What the hell have you got to do in this country to get a sentence that fits the crime. We need a total rethink as far as judges and sentencing is concerned so that monsters like this one will be kept off our street,
