BROWN 'RUNNING SCARED' OF EU TREATY REFERENDUM

BROKEN PROMISE: Brown

Thursday July 26,2007

By Macer Hall, Political Editor

GORDON Brown was yesterday accused of breaking a “personal” promise to give voters a referendum on Europe.

The Prime Minister clashed with Tory leader David Cameron over the Government’s refusal to give the public a
say on the European Union Treaty.

During heated exchanges at Prime Minister’s Questions, Mr Brown repeatedly declined to say how close the treaty is to the failed EU Constitution.

“Why is he afraid to trust the people and hold that referendum?” taunted Mr Cameron .

The Tory leader used their final weekly Commons clash before the 11-week summer break to go on the offensive over the Government’s latest surrender to Brussels. Critics claim the EU treaty, signed by Tony Blair last month in virtually his last act as Prime Minister, will lead to an increase in Brussels meddling in British affairs.

Mr Cameron seized on analysis which shows the draft EU treaty is virtually identical to the scrapped Constitution  which was dumped after being rejected by polls in France and Holland.

The Tory leader told Mr Brown: “The Irish prime minister says 90 per cent of the Constitution remains in the treaty.

“The Spanish foreign minister says it’s 98 per cent. What figure would the Prime Minister put on it?” But Mr Brown hit back by accusing Mr Cameron of ditching his drive for the political centre ground and caving in to the Tory right.

Tories claim the treaty fundamentally changes Britain’s relationship with the EU and therefore should be subject to a vote.

Mr Brown says a referendum is not necessary because Britain has the right to opt out of decisions affecting crime, immigration, taxation and benefits.

The draft text of the treaty was published by the EU on Monday, but only in French.

Officials said an English version will not be released until  after Parliament breaks up for the summer recess today.

EU REFERENDUM?

26.07.07, 12:34pm

Never whilst this Lying Cycloptic Un-Elected Autocratic Scottish Marxist Lunatic is head of our country (or whats left of it) we will never have a vote. Why because that is DEMOCRACY, Broons DEMOCRACY is that of "I know whats best, you will agree with what I say and under no circumstances will you have any say in what I am doing". This Treaty either in French,German,Italian,Dutch,English or any other damned language is THE CONSTITUTION and as such the British people should have a say. That say should be by way of a referendum forthwith why not go one better and ask the question should we stay in this corrupt organisation or withdraw totally because I'm bound to say they need us more than we need them this nation is just a Purse that is being Bled Dry with nothing being given in return?
