CAMERON 'MUST PRIORITISE SECURITY'

David Cameron urged his Conservative party 'to stay on course'

Wednesday July 25,2007

David Cameron will be urged to put Britain's national security at the top of his priorities if the Conservatives win power.

A Conservative policy group commissioned by Mr Cameron to look into national and international security is publishing its report, which argues that defending Britain should be "of paramount importance" to a future Tory Government.

The report calls for the creation of a US-style National Security Council to form long-term strategies on foreign policy, defence, internal security and national cohesion.

And it recommends a much higher priority for homeland defence, with the establishment of a dedicated civil emergencies force with a permanent command headquarters to provide leadership in the event of a terrorist attack or other major disaster.

The report will be launched by group chair Dame Pauline Neville-Jones. While Mr Cameron will attend the launch event in London, he is not committed to adopting the group's recommendations as Tory policy.

The report accuses the Government of damaging Britain's international reputation and the effectiveness of the trans-Atlantic alliance by "naively underestimating the challenge of state-building in hostile environments".

It says that the Government has undermined security at home by treating people from ethnic minority backgrounds as members of groups rather than individual citizens.

And it states that, under Labour, the Government has overstretched the armed forces, leaving them without sufficient reserves.

Among its recommendations are the creation of a new Partnership for Open Societies, bringing together leading democracies and regional powers to promote stable, liberal democracy in the broader Middle East.

The report also calls for a four-yearly defence review to ensure that armed forces capabilities match up to the missions they are required to undertake.

WHAT CAMRON MUST PRIORITISE...

26.07.07, 1:38pm

The only thing Cameron needs to prioritise is his resignation as Tory leader and let's get someone who says what he thinks and who is more in touch with the voting public. There ra3e only 2 Tories who fit this description David Davis or William Hague either of whom would ensure that I voted Tory at the next election but if Cameron is still in charge I'll probably vote BNP or UKIP or that English whatever they call themselves party.

“STAY ON COURSE!”: GREAT ADVICE FOR LEMMINGS

25.07.07, 10:23pm

Sorry, Horse, I don't have your confidence in Cameron: I hope I am wrong!
“Stay on course!” shouts Captain Cameron. This is all very fine if one, like their captain, is possessed by a death-wish by being steadfast on a foundering rust-bucket.
Of course, what else is this wannabe captain going to urge his near mutinous crew: “toss me overboard” or Abandon ship! Me first!”?
In my opinion, Cameron hasn’t got the rudimentary skills to captain an inflatable-dingy – let alone a political party or nation. A nation, which is in desperate want of true leadership, not some self-serving novice.
