THOUSANDS MORE PATIENTS HIT BY 'C DIFF' SUPERBUG

The number of elderly patients infected with a superbug has soared

Wednesday July 25,2007

By Victoria Fletcher

THE number of elderly patients infected with a hospital superbug has soared by almost a quarter.

More than 15,500 people aged over 65 caught the bacteria clostridium difficile in the first three months of this year.

This was a jump from 12,800 cases reported before Christmas.

It has sparked fears that the NHS is failing to combat the C Diff bug. Yesterday MPs said Government promises to tackle it had “spectacularly failed”.

But health officials said the surge in cases was normal for the winter months when pensioners were more likely to be admitted to hospital. They admitted the figures were still two per cent higher than the same time last year, despite a drive to control hospital-acquired infections.

Potentially fatal C Diff causes diarrhoea and can damage the lining of the bowel.

Although the NHS has pledged to halve cases of the MRSA superbug by 2008, a target has never been set for C Diff. However, in the past year rates of MRSA have dropped by 10 per cent.

Norman Lamb, Lib Dem’s Health spokesman, said the elderly are at risk from infection in care homes.

He said: “Older people are at greater risk, yet cases of MRSA and C Diff in care homes have more than doubled in the past few years while the Government has focused its anti-superbug measures on hospitals.

A Health Protection Agency survey also revealed that NHS targets and cutbacks are threatening the effectiveness of health trusts to fight infections.

After learning about the Muslim Terrorist Doctors in the NHS who were involved in the Airport Suicide Bombing Attempts you have to ask the question !!

THEY OBVIOUSLY SEE THE BRITISH AS A TARGET AND THEREFORE YOU HAVE TO ASK THE QUESTION :- IS "C DIFF" SOMETHING THAT COULD HAVE BEEN DELIBERATELY SPREAD THROUGHOUT OUR HOSPITALS BY THESE MUSLIM TERRORIST DOCTORS ?

AFTER ALL THEY HAVE BEEN IN AN IDEAL POSITION TO DO UNDERHAND THINGS WITHOUT BEING NOTICED HAVENT THEY ?
