EVEN by Hollywood standards it was a momentous welcome but when it comes to the Beckhams, nothing is done by halves.

Sunday night’s star-studded party, hosted by Tom Cruise and wife Katie Holmes, together with Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, was to welcome David and Victoria to Los Angeles.

And if ever proof were needed that the Beckhams had “arrived” in America then this was it.

Stars such as Demi Moore, Bruce Willis, Jim Carrey, Eva Longoria and Brooke Shields all turned up to meet and greet
the two newest celebrities on the block.

Fellow Spice Girl Melanie Brown, Little Britain’s Matt Lucas and Hollywood film director Ron Howard were also among the 600 guests at the invitation-only event, as was former Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller, who is credited with masterminding David Beckham’s £125million, five-year deal with LA Galaxy.

As they posed outside the Museum Of Contemporary Art’s Geffen Contemporary Gallery, the Beckhams were given a taste of classic Hollywood. A red carpet was rolled out and a small army of police kept gawkers at a distance.

There were limousines and TV cameras by the dozen. Helicopters thumped overhead. Inside, the warehouse-like venue was transformed with couches, elaborate lighting and floral displays into a glittering nightclub.

It was a fitting climax to more than a week of relentless attention for the Beckhams. Now all David has to do is remember that he’s there for the “soccer”.
