Confusion over immigration

Saturday November 7,2009

By Daily Express Reporter

THE Tories said last night that the Government was in confusion over immigration after a Cabinet minister admitted that Britain was becoming “pretty congested”.

Welsh Secretary Peter Hain expressed concern at official forecasts the UK’s population could reach 70 million.

His gaffe came during the BBC’s Question Time on Thursday. He said: “Frankly, I think 70 million is too much. We are a pretty congested island.” But Home Secretary Alan Johnson had earlier said the forecast did not make him “lie awake at night”.

The Tories seized on the latest sign of Cabinet disarray over immigration policy.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Grayling said: “The Government is completely confused over immigration.

“A Conservative government would introduce a limit on the numbers allowed to come here to work, as well as other measures to fight illegal immigration.”
