GREEN BELT FIGHT LOOMS OVER HOMES

Hazel Blears put environmentalists on notice for a showdown

Tuesday July 10,2007

Communities Secretary Hazel Blears put environmentalists on notice for a showdown over house-building in the green belt.

Stressing the need to release more land for affordable homes across the country, she refused to rule out redrawing the green belt map.

Speaking to MPs in one of her first appearances in the job, Ms Blears promised that the Government would move fast to ease the housing shortage.

That would mean freeing up greater swathes of land for development, using the planning system to better effect and getting more councils to lead home-building projects.

"I think we are going to have a tussle, if you like, because some people are concerned about environmental issues," she told the Communities and Local Government Select Committee.

"But I think the priority has to be to build these homes."

Pressed on whether ministers harboured plans to significantly revise green belt boundaries, Ms Blears said she was in no position to offer "categoric assurances".

She added: "I'm very well aware of the different stresses and strains there will be in the system and part of our job is how do we get the balance right."

Her comments come as Downing Street signalled that a central thrust of Gordon Brown's first legislative programme would be housing.

Ms Blears insisted the Government had to facilitate the release of more land as its shortage was currently a "big block" on the building of new homes. Part of that would involve a fresh push across the Government to make available public sector sites. She said that had to happen "very quickly indeed".

GREEN BELT FIGHT LOOMS OVER HOMES

There are plenty of old brown sites that after cleaning up could quite adequately used for new housing without destroying what greenbelt we have left.

ABOUT TIME

10.07.07, 5:18pm

Green belt fight looms over homes and thats' about time. Look Conservatives shouting, YET AGAIN! about family life, which they have distroyed along with NuLabour/Labour. Issues which they are just exploiting, YET AGAIN!.

We need more home now more than ever, with the endless amount of migrants marching in and housing has been ignored ny consecative governments.

Local Conservative Councils keep putting the block on housing, unless it's private high priced housing.

We need thousands of new homes, both social and affordable, like yesterday.

So the Green Belt rules, need to be changed, so Conservative Councils are forced to build.

Yeah! Go Hazel.. Show tories for what they are, Greedy and narrowminded. Media seekers... We need homes, I have my family due here soon and I need a home for them, be nice if it was a new build.

I,VE HEARD A RUMOUR

10.07.07, 4:00pm

That libour want to concrete over all the land between John-0-Groats & lands End. But are prepared to Ring fence all the places they live in to be immigrant free. Planning must be a bitch to fit in all the speed cameras, road tolls, broken water pipes, and flood areas.

Sorry my take is that, IF all the bloody immigrants went back to their country of origin, Asylum seekers were made to stop in the first safe country they come too (so only Irish & French would be eligible for UK). Utility companies were re-nationalised, (they may have more investment, but customers see no benefit, only shareholders in some other country).

If NO DSS was available for school leavers until they have worked a min of 2 years. Forcing the lazy drunken/drugged louts to get work. Then there would be no need for immigrant workers. No immigrants mean less need for new houses + no asylum seekers means less need for pinching council houses (jumping q's).

Overall would mean less strain on Health, welfare, housing, water & so on..... Am I the only one that thinks like this?

OH and to make this happen get rid of our useless money-grubbing morons some people like to call politicians.
