CARE HOME PROBE: THIRD BODY EXHUMED

Tuesday July 10,2007

Detectives investigating the suspicious deaths of seven elderly residents at a care home will exhume a third body on Tuesday.

The remains of Fred Green, 81, will be removed from a graveyard in the village of Kingweston, near Somerton, in rural Somerset. The grandfather of 10 died on January 6 last year, while he was a resident at Parkfields residential home in nearby Butleigh.

Police are also investigating the deaths of six other elderly residents at the home.

Parkfields' former managers Rachel and Leigh Baker were originally arrested following the New Year's Day death of 97-year-old Lucy Cox.

They were questioned on suspicion of administering a noxious substance and released on bail. Neither has been charged with any offence.

Forensic officers will attend the villages cemetery to begin exhuming Mr Green's remains.

After his remains are exhumed, a post mortem examination will be carried by a pathologist, who will check the body for traces of drugs.

He will be reburied on Thursday during a private ceremony.

This will be the third and final body to be exhumed during Avon and Somerset Police's lengthy investigation.

The remains of Nellie 'Mary' Pickford, 89, were removed from Glastonbury Cemetery on June 5. Grandmother-of-four Marion Alder, 79, was exhumed from the graveyard of St Leonard's Church, Butleigh, a week later. Police had previously insisted they had "no option" but to exhume the bodies, as it was the only way of finding out if the three residents had been poisoned.
