SECURITY STEPPED UP AT WIMBLEDON

Police outside the All England Tennis Club yesterday

Tuesday July 3,2007

UNPRECEDENTED anti-car bomb measures were put in place at Wimbledon yesterday.

Huge concrete vehicle blockers were brought in to protect the main entrance gates, to prevent any car smashing through into the grounds.

A police helicopter buzzed above the tournament and queue before play began. And extra officers were drafted in to check each car entering the car parks outside the grounds.

Drivers were being made to open their boots before being allowed through, and mirrors were used to check under vehicles.

Extra searches of bags and clothing were being conducted. Even famous tennis players did not escape the clampdown, with tennis racquet bags also coming under scrutiny.

Lorries carrying the tournament’s famous strawberries were being stopped on the A3, close to Wimbledon, and searched. Security guards boarded each vehicle and rode in with the consignments to ensure no devices were planted on them afterwards.

All England Club chief executive Ian Ritchie said: “As a result of recent events in London and Glasgow, and further to our own discussions with police and other authorities, we have been advised to adopt extra security measures to protect the areas of most risk.”

Spectators were advised to allow plenty of time to get into the grounds, and to use public transport where possible.
