HOSPITAL AT CENTRE OF TERRORIST ENQUIRY

The bomb desposal team at The Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley

Tuesday July 3,2007

By Paul Gilbride

THE Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley remained at the centre of the counter-terrorism operation yesterday - after two men, believed to be medical students were arrested at the staff accommodation block.

The duo, aged 25 and 28 were detained in the doctors' quarters close to the hospital's maternity ward in the early hours of yesterday morning. As one of the suicide bombers continued to fight for his life in the hospital, bomb experts were called in to carry out two controlled explosions on a Vauxhall Corsa in the grounds.

Yesterday we exclusively revealed that Airport suicide bomber Bilal Abdulla, 27, had been working as a doctor at the hospital. Army explosive and ordinance disposal experts first arrived at the RAH on Sunday to blow up a white BMW.
Yesterday they were back, carrying out the two explosions on the small blue hatchback after clearing the grounds and roads outside the hospital.

The first explosion was heard at 3.45pm followed almost exactly five minutes later by the second.

None of the patients were evacuated.

Police confimed the Corsa was linked to the Glasgow 4x4 airport attack.

Meanwhile throughout the day police forensic teams continued to examine flats in the staff accommodation blocks which were sealed off.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: "We have carried out two controlled explosions on a vehicle which we believe is linked to two men involved in the attack at Glasgow Airport. We cannot confirm where the two other men who were arrested were detained."
