FAMILY ON TRAIL FOR SAND BATH KILLER

Lindsay Hawker

Thursday June 28,2007

By Jullan Ryall and Martin Evans

THE parents of murdered British teacher Lindsay Ann Hawker arrived in Tokyo yesterday in a fresh effort to help track down her killer.

Bill and Julia Hawker, with their daughter Louise, will meet Japanese police, who have made little progress so far in tracing the chief suspect, 28-year-old Tatsuya Ichihashi.

He has not been seen since he evaded arrest three months ago, after police discovered the naked body of 22-year-old Lindsay in a bathful of sand, on the balcony of his apartment.

Lindsay, of Brandon, Warwicks, had extensive bruising to her arms, legs and face – and her neck was broken.

A British Embassy spokes-man in Tokyo said: “The purpose of the family’s visit is to raise the profile of the case and give it renewed prominence in Japan. They want to get the investigation back in the public eye.”

The couple also plan to hand out leaflets on the streets near where their daughter’s body was found on March 27, in an effort to jog people’s memories.

They will also appeal on Japanese television for anyone who knows where Ichihashi is,  to come forward.

Police have issued closed-circuit TV pictures of Ichihashi and circulated 300,000 wanted posters. But Deputy Superin-tendent Takeo Terajima said: “There are no new leads or developments in the investigation, although we continue to have people come forward with information.” Police believe that Ichihashi is being shielded by friends or family, but there has been speculation that he may have committed suicide.

His parents, wealthy doctors from the central district of Gifu, have refused to comment on the case so far, or call on their son to give himself up.

It is not known whether the Hawkers will meet the Ichihashi family or their legal representatives during their trip.

Lindsay was working as an English teacher for the Nova Intercultural Institute. It is thought Ichihashi approached her in the street, about lessons.
