BROWN TO SUCCEED BLAIR THIS AFTERNOON

Wednesday June 27,2007

By Polly Buchanan for express.co.uk

GORDON Brown is to succeed Tony Blair as Prime Minister later this afternoon, bringing Blair's ten year premiership to an end.

Blair will meet the Queen after his last Prime Minister's questions session in the Commons at noon today. He will then bid farewell to his Downing Street staff before going to Buckingham Palace to meet with the monarch and tender his resignation.

Mr Brown will then journey to meet the Queen, who will formally offer him the role this afternoon.

After taking over as PM, it's predicted Brown will immediately begin his Cabinet reshuffle, with Trade and Industry secretary Alistair Darling widely tipped to be named as chancellor.

Mr Blair is also expected to quit as an MP - if he is confirmed in his new job as a Middle East peace envoy.

The so-called "quartet" - of the UN, America, Russia and the EU - are thought likely to make an announcement on the position later.
