Motherwell players gather in a huddle

Thursday July 2,2009

By Gary Keown

FORMER Motherwell keeper Graeme Smith has signed a two-year deal with Brighton.

The 26-year-old, above, turned down the chance to stay at Fir Park after his contract ran out and has agreed a switch to the League One outfit.

Smith said: “This club is moving forward, moving towards the Championship at some point and that’s what I want.”

The former Rangers kid will compete with Dutchman Michel Kuipers for the gloves, but manager Russell Slade clearly has belief in his new recruit.

Slade said: “Graeme comes with a good pedigree.

“He has been regular first choice for Motherwell in the SPL over the past two seasons and featured in their UEFA Cup campaign last season.

“He has represented Scotland at B level and certainly has a good presence at over 6ft.

“We watched him on a number of occasions last season and he comes with a strong recommendation.

“Alongside Michel, we now have ample experience in the goalkeeping department for the new season.”
