OF THE many things that have careered out of control in recent months, petrol prices have been among the most dramatic.

The Daily express has campaigned hard against inflated prices at the pumps and the Government has made a point
of telling petrol retailers to pass on oil price reductions to motorists immediately.

You might have thought that showed a commitment on its part to lightening the burden. But no. today the Government increases petrol duty by 2p a litre.

We were not supposed to notice. When it comes to increasing taxes by stealth this Government has no equal and what could be stealthier than adding a duty that becomes an invisible part of the price?

In all the talk about new fiscal arrangements it didn’t get a mention even though the reduction in VAt is not enough to counteract it.

Motorists have long been treated as a bottomless source of revenue to be exploited at will. this new hike in duty means that well over half of what we pay for petrol now goes to the Government in tax.

And there are more rises to come. Motorists have been targeted – the environment was used as the excuse but in reality it was simply an act of greed.

The majority of motoring is not optional, it is an essential part of domestic and commercial life.

the proposed massive increase in vehicle excise duty was opposed so effectively that it became politically unattractive and the Government dropped it.

Raising duty is sneakier – just another example of this Government picking our pockets.

Yes, indeed they are, perpetually. Nothing wrong with a ' splurge ' for the sake of law and order, that is for motoring offences. So if a splurge or scurry of activity against the errant
motorist, is common place or accepted, what of the real scourges on society / life by class 4. 5. low life, or even the well being of an individual trying thier best in life but violated, intimidated by mentally retarded kids of mentally retarded parents, if not indeed truly mentally retarded but of low intellectual capacity / ability. Young 'males ' violence, binge drinking disgusting sickening behaviour, slappers here there and everywhere hooting squealing showing off what is available to any Tom **** and Harry, this in the early hours when decent ' folk ' are trying to sleep behind lock, bolt, chain, panic button, security fencing.
No one should be exempt least of all public servants, even more so, open for scrutiny any hour of the day or night.
