Should all signs in Britain be in English?

SO much information is being translated for migrants that they no longer need to learn to speak English, a minister finally admitted yesterday.

The simple answer is yes - and I would include Welsh as well, apart from points of entry into the UK. As far as other non British languages are concerned, there is no place for them. Learn English if you live in the British Isles. In Spain, even in places where there is a large permanent expat population, there are no road signs in English!

Wales and Scotland have their own languages and which languages are used should be the decision of the local authority and reflect the make up of the local popualtion,but English SHOULD always be one of the languages ,since it is recoginised universally,and the language of MOST UK Citizens .
It does not make sense to exclude a langauge of a large ethnic population simply because the English dont understand it!Its not for your benefit.
A bit less arrogance England and maybe relations might improve,

What the bloo d y hell is going on here? I work all over the world and everywhere any negotiations are being carried on between two different language speakers then it is in English.

All nations use English as the default language when they deal with any other national trading partner!
English is the language of Science, Aviation, Maritime, it is the worlds preferred communication language. Here in its birthplace our political traitors have betrayed our nation and all we stand for.

They should be in the language of the people from Pakistan and Banglasesh. After all these people are having 5 children on average compared to the indigenous Britions' 1.2 so it's only a matter of time before they become the majority.

So unless a certain party gets in power, then why not save ourselves some time and change the roadsigns now?

is the language of money, it is perhaps the most useful language to learn. part of the attractivness of britain to immigrants is the ability to learn english (its a main reason whaty so many foreign students come here). to suggest it is under threat is completely moronic. every non-english speaking country in the world is worried about how influential the english language is, and here we've got no-marks complaining that its being threatened.

dim, to say the least.

off the top of my head, i could recall when american christians threatened to kill the beatles, held huge album burning parties, etc. when john lennon said that the beatles were 'bigger than jesus'.

i could recall (and i can provide quotes if you want) when hitler said it was his mission as a christian to murder jewish people... oh, ok, here are some quotes:

so i'm glad you take my points on board. but in resonse i would say that, it has very likely always been the case that when people have makde large scale sweepig judgements on the basis of race, ethnicity and religion, they have always pretty much said... "you, well anyone can tell that these people are different, they are evil".

i personally won't buy it and won't accept it. sane people do not want war and conflict to rule their lives, so if loads of people believe in a faith, it would be unreasonable to suggest that that faith is not based on cruelty and war, but being twisted in that direction by a few. just like any other religion has been on occasion.

I take your point about not wanting Britain to be a nazi state, but in all your posts you fail to address the point in question, and that is: MUSLIM HATRED IS NOT UNWARRANTED - IT'S FOR THE REASONS I DESCRIBED EARLIED. You just equate it with some sort of nebulus prejudice prevalent in the '60s and '70s based on skin colour, accent, etc. You say that all religions have their foibles and misrepresentatives, and that's true. But can you REALLY not see the difference is between Islam and all other religions. Do I need to send you some links to pictures (eg. 7/7, flag burnings or demonstrators' placards)?

If you wish to continue the discussion, then address this issue instead of introducing other spurious arguments. Or better still, send me some links to a picture of a mob of screaming Christians with placards saying "Behead those who insult Jesus", or a picture of Jews burning an Arab flag, any Arab flag, or a German flag, hell even a Nazi flag, or perhaps a picture of a Quaker rendering a bus into a banana split with explosives.

Until then, please don't bother coming back to me.

i say 'you people' because its pretty clear that there is a culture of xenophobia on this website. one i do not subscribe to, so yes, i would separate myself from 'you people' on many levels. in that case, it was an intellectual level, where the so-called 'defenders of britain' actually have very little clue about the history of britain (their own history), and yet, have the gall to suggest that i am upatriotic, or a traitor or whatever, becasue i challenge their bigoted views of this country and the world.

and yes, i never tire of the old fascist tactic: "he disagrees, we can't deal with his arguments, so we'll try to undermine him by suggesting he is a foreigner, that way it doesn't matter if we can't deal with his arguments"

tired, old, and sad.

you have to pick up your game, patv. while your at it, grow up too.

look around at the rhetoric you are supporting here, and look at the party that most of the people here would like to win the next election. this is a party whose leaders in the past have picked on blacks, and jewish people. now it is cynically convenient for them to turn their gaze to another 'foreign group' and immigrants in general in order to whip up a bit of support through hatred.

if you want to support that, then on your concience be it. but i won't put myself in league with people with that kind of history. I'll fight against it, even if that means having to show tolerance to faiths i couldn't give a moonbeam about, because i know what the results of that kind of language are.
