STATISTICS AND DAMNED LIES
Published: Saturday June 21,2008 by panadero
ReubenMo makes a good point about misleading "average" income figures. If we take 10 income earners of whom 5 earn £40K pa and 5 earn £10K pa we have an average income figure of £25K pa based on that data set. Yet noone in that group actually earns that figure. To most people the quotation of "average" income figures means that is what most people earn which is quite untrue. This kind of statistical distortion is the speciality of the ONS - official purveyors of fiddled figures by appointment to HM Treasury. Government has privileged access to data of all kinds and habitually uses that power to control and manipulate us and perpetuate itself in power - rather than to benefit the people. No wonder then that hardly anyone trusts government figures and that politicians, in turn, are so despised..
