"great use of america as an example.

a country notorious for violent crime, and one of the highest rates of murder in the developed world."

I'd much rather walk around Brooklyn at present than Brixton.

With a UK population of 60 million people vs 301 million in the United States (2007 estimates) one would *expect* violent crime numbers to be proportionally higher, just like road accident figures, etc.

To use these statistics to infer violent tendency as you are is nonsense. Try living in the United States a few years. You can sit with 80,000+ fans at an American football game and never catch a whiff of the foul chanting you do at some football matches in the UK, let alone any violence. Does that mean Brits are more violent because a minority can't behave at sporting events? Of course not.

If you're saying Americans are bad because they have guns, consider this.

"The right of the citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered, as the palladium of the liberties of a republic; since it offers a strong moral check against the usurpation and arbitrary power of rulers; and will generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to resist and triumph over them."

Perhaps if this were the case in our green and soggy land we could do a little more than impotently piss and moan as our Orwellian government gives it away to Brussels.
