The chap committed a crime to escape from one of the most vile and repressive countries in the world, asked for asylum after serving his time, and is now making a contribution to society in his new home.

You're confusing the nominally democratic, nominally peaceful Afghanistan with the place you or I would have done anything we could to get out of that he actually left.
