The tunnel does not go in a straight line, it turns suddenly. Henri Paul was driving at over 100 mph. Both Diana and Dodi Fayed were not wearing seat belts - an unusual occurrence for her. Added to this recipe for a disaster was Dodi Fayed's track record for insisting that drivers step on the gas -at least on 2 occasions in Los Angeles.

In Los Angeles on the notorious and dangerous 405 Freeway, known also as the San Diego Freeway, a fast motorway under at any time, Dodi Fayed chose to ask his driver on one occasion to go even faster. Step on it he is said to have ordered the driver after giving him $100 to get him to the Los Angeles Airport as quickly as possible. Damn the rest of the drivers. Speed of 75 mph on a straight freeway like that are not unusual, but 100 mph?

It doesn't matter whom this party was seeking to escape, running all the red lights at the approach to the tunnel in the Place de la Concorde was a consequence waiting to happen.
