IT took a jury just 45 minutes to clear Peter Bacon of rape, so weak was the case against him.
But while the law dictates that his accuser must remain anonymous, Mr Bacon’s good name has been dragged through the mud.
The rape law is in urgent need of overhaul.
If an accuser is to remain anonymous, then surely a defendant should be entitled to the same protection in cases that boil down to her word against his. At least until a jury has decided whose account it believes.
I think that the law on consent must also be put on a more equal footing between the genders. It is a nonsense that an inebriated woman should be absolved of all responsibility for her conduct as regards the giving or withholding consent, while an inebriated man is held responsible not only for his choices, but for hers as well.
Such infantilisation does women no favours, leading some to suppose they can drink themselves into a stupor without putting themselves at risk.
When two adults get drunk and then flirt, kiss and end up in bed together, both may end up regretting it in the morning. But where no force has been used and where consent appeared mutual, they are surely equally culpable for the events of the night before.
Currently the law appears to allow women to retrospectively withdraw consent the next day if they wake up with regrets at what they did when they had their beer goggles on. As Mr Bacon’s accuser discovered this week, juries will never accept such a one-sided view of interactions between the sexes. And nor should they.
For such cases to end up as rape trials is an insult to real rape victims ranging from women who get attacked by strangers in public places or by intruders in their own homes, to those who are sexually assaulted by violent partners or former partners.
If feminist lawyers wish to improve the pathetically low conviction rates in rape cases, one way forward is surely to stop bringing joke cases to trial.
AMEND RAPE LAW SO DRUNK GIRLS CAN'T CHANGE THEIR MIND THE MORNING AFTER...

It's a no-brainer to assume that the woman has consented to sexual intercourse in all circumstances other than forceful submission.
When women make malicious claims to being raped, then it is only fair that they are subjected to severe penalties and their anonymity set aside.

AMEND RAPE LAW
14.04.2009, 12:51am
Yes I agree this law should changed. The accused name should be withheld until he has been tried and convicte.
Woman must take responsibility for themselves for getting so drunk that they don't know what they are doing, or are unable to make it known to a man that they are unwilling.
But we also need to have al law that will prevent men from taking deliberate advantage of woman in such a state. How do we do it.
Clamp down on drinking habits is the only way.

AMEND RAPE LAW SO DRUNK GIRLS CAN'T CHANGE THEIR MIND

I know traditionally it is a womans perogative to change her mind but that concept dates from before ladettes and girls on the pull/pill had been invented. They want equality; let them have it, all of it. Nobody forces them to go out and drink themseves stupid it's their choice and their resposibility. That said, genuine, 100 percent no doubt, cases of rape should be dealt with the full force of the law. ( I know I'm a sad old git but at times like this I sure miss capital punishment ).

CONTRACT
30.03.2009, 10:38am
Men must get a written contract and get the girls to sign it to agree to sex. Then it must be signed and witnessed by your local scumbag ie; your MP. This would at least cut the abortion rate ! LOL!

FALSE ALLEGATIONS
28.03.2009, 7:14pm
Too many innocent men have had their lives destroyed by false allegations.
If a woman is found to have made a FALSE allegation - and there are many cases of this - It's time the law showed some real justice.
A man found guilty of rape faces up to 15 vyears in prison. If a woman is found to have made a false allegation, and to have deliberately done so as often happens, then SHE should receive a 15 year sentence.
It might stop women making false allegations to "get back" at ex husbands and boyfriends.

I fully agree with this article. Though Mr Bacon has been found innocent he will be barred from his ambition to be a teacher. Thats is the result of having an allegation made against you, innocent or not.
This case should never have reached the charge phase and both the CPS and police should look at their procedues and training. Whilst dealing with cases like this serial rapists were going undetected.
Time for men to be treated fairly and equally. End this
